About the artist

After studying philosophy and art, John Buckler taught Art and Design throughout his working life in schools and colleges. Now an artist and writer living on the Mendip Hills in Somerset.

Profoundly influenced by the Constructivists (eg. Pasmore, Hepworth and Nicholson) and the Surrealists, (eg. Schwitters, Gris and Cornell), his work slips between the two. All pieces are governed by an internal logic that determines their organisation. Whether pure abstraction, in the case of the prints or the expressive mode of the assemblages, the objects used present their own possibilities for arrangement, as the work progresses. Their meanings reveal themselves with time and reflection. Often the titles add another layer of possibilities that the artist himself is not consciously aware of, much as in the same way, poetry reveals itself.
